Brock Osweiler became a very rich man Wednesday afternoon, reportedly reaching an agreement with the Houston Texans on a four-year contract worth $72 million.
That’s a lot of dough — a reported $37 million of which is guaranteed — to fork over to a quarterback who’s completed fewer than 200 career passes and has yet to start more than seven games in a season.
But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what New Orleans Saints backup Matt Flynn — the king of outlandishly large QB contracts — had to offer on the matter:
For those unfamiliar with Flynn’s history, he effectively parlayed a record-setting performance in his final game as a Green Bay Packer into a three-year, $26 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. He was unable to beat out then-rookie Russell Wilson for the starting job in Seattle, however, and threw just nine passes in a Seahawks uniform before being traded after one season.
Flynn has bounced from team to team in the four seasons since and has started a grand total of seven games in his NFL career. In short, he knows a bad — or, at the very least, a premature — contract when he sees one.
