The Navy’s highest recognition award presented to a civilian organization, the Distinguished Public Service Award, was presented to the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base program on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Fenway Park.
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus presented Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner, Home Base Executive Director Brigadier General Jack Hammond, Chief Operating Officer Michael Allard, and clinical leaders Dr. Peg Harvey and Dr. Louis Chow, with the award during the pregame ceremonies.
The Secretary threw out the first pitch and joined NESN Broadcasters Jerry Remy and Dave O’Brien to talk about the many reasons why Home Base was chosen for the award. Watch the interview here.
“The Red Sox are such an iconic institution and the fact that they have stepped up and not for publicity, but just a willingness to help and a desire to do something for the people who have done so much for us,” Ray Mabus said.
The Run to Home Base run/walk on July 23, 2016 is one of the many non-profit events and organizations that NESN’s social responsibility program, NESN Connects, supports throughout the year.
