The rivalry between the United States and Canadian women’s hockey teams is one of the most intense in all of sports.

It was evident at the 2014 Winter Olympics when the U.S. lost a heartbreaker in the gold medal game in Sochi, and it continued Monday night in the gold medal game of the IIHF World Women’s Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Alex Carpenter, a North Reading, Mass., native and star at Boston College, won the gold for Team USA by scoring an overtime goal around the crease.
