Isaiah Thomas has talked with Kevin Durant and seemingly wants to play a huge role in trying to recruit the star free agent to Boston. Thomas even is willing to attend the Celtics’ Saturday meeting with Durant if president of basketball operations Danny Ainge would like some extra support.
But what exactly is Thomas’ sales pitch?
The C’s have a lot going for them, but so do the other teams meeting with Durant this weekend in The Hamptons. Thomas really would need to showcase what Boston is all about, especially with those close to Durant telling The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears that it’ll take some sweet talking to convince the seven-time All-Star not to re-sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“Forty-eight wins without a so-called superstar, I guess they say, in the best city in the NBA, the best fans in the NBA. The history of Boston is self-explanatory,” Thomas said Thursday when asked on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria” how he’d pitch the Celtics to Durant. ” … If I am in that meeting on Saturday or whatever day it is, or I’m able to talk to Kevin Durant face to face, I’ll just be as real as I possibly can and tell him how I feel about Boston — how I felt about Boston before I got here and how I feel about it now, and that’s all I can really do.
“In this predicament, in this situation, everybody is going to try to sell him the world, or sell any free agent the world, and my job is just, as a player, to keep it as real as possible and try to get him to a great city and great situation and try to get him to Boston, to where with him or with any other superstar we can give us that muscle to raise the 18th banner.”
Durant reportedly was scheduled to meet with the Thunder on Thursday, the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, the Celtics and San Antonio Spurs on Saturday and the Miami Heat on Sunday. The Thunder also would like to meet again with Durant after the other teams make their sales pitches, according to ESPN.com.
