Giants Acquire Left-Hander Matt Moore From Rays In Four-Player Trade

The San Francisco Giants acquired left-handed pitcher Matt Moore from the Tampa Bay Rays before Monday’s Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline.

The Giants sent third baseman Matt Duffy and minor leaguers Lucius Fox and Michael Santos to the Rays to complete the deal.

Moore is 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 21 starts this season. The 27-year-old has performed well of late, flashing the upside that made him one of MLB’s most promising young pitchers in 2012 and 2013. The Giants clearly are hopeful that keeps up, though there’s some risk given that Moore’s peripheral stats aren’t great and he already has one Tommy John surgery under his belt.

Duffy is having a disappointing 2016 after finishing second in National League Rookie of the Year voting last season. The 25-year-old is hitting .253 with four home runs, 21 RBI and a .671 OPS this season following a 2015 campaign in which he batted .295 with 12 homers, 77 RBI and a .762 OPS. He hasn’t played since June 20 because of an Achilles injury.
