By now, you’ve probably heard the rumors about New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski contemplating retirement.
Between a possible acting career and reported friction between he and head coach Bill Belichick, it’s hard to get a read on why the 28-year-old won’t commit to playing in 2018.
But former Pats tight end Jermaine Wiggins offered a possible reason why Gronkowski has been so tight-lipped about his future.
Wiggins told TMZ Sports he thinks the issue may revolve around money and that Gronkowski should be getting paid more than his current contract, leading to some understandable frustration.
“He should be getting paid $15-16 million a year, but he’s not,” Wiggins said. “So there’s definitely that frustration there.”
The former tight end asserted that Gronkowski is the most dangerous player in the NFL and is “more valuable” than Antonio Brown and Julio Jones, two of the league’s most valuable wide receivers.
“You can line him up outside like a wide receiver and it’s always a mismatch, no matter who the other team puts in front of him,” Wiggins said.
Gronkowski restructured his six-year, $54 million deal with New England last May.
