'Manchester City Already Has Too Many Strikers,' Arsene Wenger Says Discouraging a Move for Robin van Persie Fox Soccer reports that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has moved to quash speculation around a potential move for star striker Robin van Persie. The prolific Dutch marksman recently scored his 100th goal for the club after refusing to discuss a potential contract extension with the club. Rumors recently surfaced that cash-rich Manchester City were  lining eyeing a January move for the striker as a replacement for Carlos Tevez

"Anybody who wants to sign one of our players, everybody has my phone number and can call me." Wenger reportedly said. "I never said I was unhappy with Man City but I don't know why we speak about transfers. I will never answer any more. "Robin is under contract until 2013. This is a story created to create a story. There is no truth in it."

"Man City already have problems because they have too many strikers, they pay half of the league for them to play away somewhere. Why should they want to buy strikers? It's very difficult to understand."

Manchester City has raided Arsenal for four first-team players in recent years. Defender Kolo Toure and striker Emmanuel Adebayor joined the up-and-coming team a year ago. Playmaker Samir Nasri and defender Gael Clichy made lucrative moves to the club during the summer transfer window.

The loss of Nasri was a psycological blow to Arsenal, as it was forced to sell the midfielder because he would not sign a contract extension. The risk of losing him for free at the end of the season was too great for Wenger, who reluctantly sanctioned Nasri’s £22 million ($37.8 million) sale.

He reinvested much of the money into his squad in an effort to salvage the 2011-12 season. Arsenal is off to its worst start in half a century and in jeaopardy of missing out on a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
