Dario Franchitti captured his third victory at the Indy 500 Sunday, but he needed a wild finish to win this one.
Franchitti was locked in a tight race with Takuma Sato when the drivers' cars briefly touched tires, sending Sato crashing into the wall in the race's closing minutes. The crash gave Franchitti the breathing room he needed to cruise to victory.
Sato made a bold move, attempting to pass Franchitti in the race's final lap. But it didn't turn out how Sato envisioned it, as the Japanese driver was sent spinning into the wall and finished the race in 17th place.
Despite being just inches away from victory, Sato finished far from the top of the pack. He said after the race that Franchitti did not give him enough room to make the pass.
