Alex Rodriguez has been making news lately for all the wrong reasons. With a hip issue and now PED allegations to boot, it’s probably safe to assume the Yankees aren’t too thrilled about paying the slugger $114 million over the next five years.
Rodriguez’s contract isn’t the only awful one in baseball, though. In fact, there are plenty of terrible contracts floating around, with some being more obvious than others.
The funny — for lack of a better word — thing about baseball is that millions of dollars get tossed around as part of guaranteed contracts, but there is hardly any guarantee the benefiting player will produce. Some deals are head-scratchers from the start, while other contracts simply look bad once a player’s production goes south. Whatever the case may be, poor contracts can be extremely problematic for teams, especially when there appears to be no end in sight.
The Red Sox got lucky last season, as they were able to unload three less-than-deal contracts on the Dodgers. Usually, teams aren’t willing to take on such a financial burden, though, which has a lot of teams focused more on player development.
So which players enter the 2013 season with the most troublesome contracts? After looking at remaining years and salary, and weighing each player’s production, we think we have the 10 worst.
