Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick are two of the greatest defensive masterminds in the NFL, but which one would you rather have running your defense?
The Seattle Seahawks coach put together one of the scariest and toughest defenses in NFL history this season — one that carried the team all the way to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory. In a title matchup that featured the league’s No. 1 defense and No. 1 offense in the Denver Broncos, the Seahawks convincingly showed that defense does, in fact, win championships. It also helps to have a secondary so intimidating that it warrants its own nickname: The Legion of Boom.
The Patriots’ defense wouldn’t have been as strong as the Seahawks’ this year, but injuries kept the Pats from ever reaching their full potential in 2013. The loss of Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo to season-ending injuries seriously weakened New England, but Belichick has proven throughout the years that he can whip a group into shape — and he has a few rings to show for it.
