Brady Quinn: FSU, Baylor Slighted By College Football Playoff Committee

For some, Florida State’s position in the latest college football playoff rankings stood out.

The undefeated Seminoles slipped to No. 4 after TCU jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 for defeating Texas 48-10. Some were left wondering how FSU could just make the cut or, as former Notre Dame and NFL quarterback Brady Quinn pointed out, almost miss the top four altogether.

As Quinn wrote in his latest FootballByFootball.com column Friday, had former No. 4 pick Mississippi State defeated Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl, it’s likely that it would’ve retained its spot, meaning FSU would have dropped from No. 3 to No. 5.

Then there’s Baylor.

The Bears are 10-1 and the only team to beat TCU, yet they sit at No. 6. The chances of them cracking the final top four next week remain slim, as their final game is against lower-ranked Kansas State.

“Some believe rankings don’t matter,” Quinn wrote. “I disagree. How teams match up against one another will be pivotal in determining the national champion. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and each will try to exploit those weaknesses, so the difference in rankings does matter.”

Still, there’s a chance the rankings could correct themselves. The CFB will release one final list Sunday.
