The world would be a better place if every man-on-the-street interview was as good as Tommy Lawrence’s.

Lawrence conducted the accidental interview of a lifetime with BBC reporter Stuart Flinders last week. Flinders was interviewing random people on the street when he happened upon Lawrence. Flinders asked Lawrence if he remembered the famous Merseyside derby of 1967 that more than 100,000 witnessed live (at both Goodison Park and Anfield). Lawrence’s response will go down in the annals of journalism.

Lawrence, 74, played 390 games for Liverpool between 1957 and 1971 as goalkeeper. He won two Football League titles (1963-64 and 1965-66) and one FA Cup (1965) with Liverpool. Lawrence also conceded the goal in the Reds’ 1-0 loss to Everton in 1967.

Lawrence’s nickname was the “Flying Pig” during his playing days. It’s now time to update that moniker, allowing others to recognize him for the remainder of his days.
