Brandon Bostick, Packers’ Onside Kick Goat, Is Released But Thanks Fans

One of the biggest goats in Green Bay Packers history was released Monday.

The Packers have yet to make a formal announcement, but tight Brandon Bostick revealed via Twitter on Monday that he has been (or will be) cut by the team. Bostick’s agent also tweeted something similar.

The Packers’ decision to release Bostick comes about one month after he made one of the most costly plays in NFL history.

The Packers looked primed for a trip to the Super Bowl as they held a late lead against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. The Seahawks tried a late onside kick, and that’s when disaster struck for Bostick and the Pack. The 25-year-old jumped into the air in an attempt to field the kick. But the ball bounced off his facemask, with Seattle eventually recovering.

It later was revealed that Bostick wasn’t even supposed to make a play on the ball. He was supposed to block and allow for wide receiver Jordy Nelson to field the onside kick.

The Seahawks eventually won the game in overtime, with Bostick’s folly capping one of the worst collapses in sports history.

To Bostick’s credit, he seemed to be taking everything in stride and thanked Packers fans Monday.

Bostick has nine catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns over the course of his three-year NFL career.

The Packers fired special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum earlier this offseason.

UPDATE (4:40 p.m.): The Packers officially announced Bostick’s release Tuesday.
