Colts Propose Crazy 9-Point Touchdown Rule With ‘Bonus’ Field Goal Try

Just when you thought that three field goal lead was safe …

The NFL’s competition committee will discuss proposals for rule changes at next week’s owners meetings, and every year, one team always comes up with some crazy new idea. This year, that team is the Indianapolis Colts.

Here’s the proposal: If a team elects to go for two points after a touchdown and succeeds, it can attempt a “bonus” field goal from the 32-yard line (50-yard field goal). If the field goal is good, the team gets one point. Six points for the touchdown, two points for the conversion and one for the “bonus” field goal — hence, a 9-point touchdown.

Sound crazy? That’s because it is.

Competition committee co-chair and St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said it’s the first time in many years that a significant scoring change has been proposed, according to Pro Football Talk, and it seems unlikely the proposal will go through.

Still, it’s always fun to imagine the possibilities. An 18-point lead suddenly would be a two-possession game, a three field goal lead could come down to the wire and NFL kickers everywhere would feel that much more important.

Come to think of it, the Colts have one of the NFL’s best kickers in Adam Vinatieri and play in a dome, so this rule definitely would benefit them. We’re on to you, Indy.
