Report: Jameis Winston’s Contract With Bucs Prohibits Him From Playing Baseball

There will be no debate about Jameis Winston as a two-sports star, at least not during the life of his first NFL contract.

The No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft won’t be able to play professional baseball, even if he wanted to, according to Peter King of the Monday Morning Quarterback. According to King, there’s a clause in Winston’s contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prohibiting the former Florida State closer from playing professional baseball.

That might have been a tough clause for Winston to accept. In February, he wasn’t willing to fully comment, but he did make it sound like double-dipping was something he’d be interested in trying — at some point.

“I can’t speak on that,” Winston told King. “It was has always been my dream, but I’m just playing football right now.”

Winston, who was drafted in 2012 by the Texas Rangers in the 15th round, served as the Seminoles’ closer and also played some outfield. He made 24 relief appearances in 2014, recording seven saves and posting a 1.08 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .154 batting average. Winston went 2-2 with a 1.94 ERA and nine saves over two seasons on the baseball team. He also hit .209 with 13 RBIs in that time.

Right now, however, all of Winston’s focus is on football.
