FOXBORO, Mass. — Steve Smith didn’t put up eye-popping numbers Monday night, but when it came to his postgame media scrum, the veteran wide receiver did not disappoint.

After the Baltimore Ravens scored 20 second-half points but still lost to the New England Patriots 30-23, Smith likened his team’s ill-fated comeback to an unsavory lunch.

“I was not happy with the loss,” the 37-year-old told reporters, via WEEI.com. “Are we happy with the battle back? It’s like getting a terrible sandwich. You bite into it, still terrible, but you give the person who made the sandwich kudos. It was a good attempt. It was a terrible sandwich.”

He added: “Icing on the cake, and we got fish sticks. It was a terrible dinner. Garbage.”

Those were just two of several postgame gems from Smith, who’s known for his outspokenness both on and off the field.

“I’m just trying to be positive,” Smith told reporters. “A great philosopher said one time — Thumper’s mom in ‘Bambi’ — ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.’ I’m trying to do that.”

The Ravens turned two Patriots special teams turnovers into 14 points late in the third quarter, then got a field goal from Justin Tucker to pull within three points of their hosts. A 79-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Chris Hogan put New England back up 10, however, and Baltimore managed just three points the rest of the way.

“I don’t want to be negative Nelly, sad Sam, temper tantrum Tom,” Smith told reporters. “… I should be happy with that comeback, though.”

Smith caught four passes for 57 yards in a losing effort.
