Following Friday night's resounding 8-4 win over the Rangers, Boston designated infielder Chris Woodward for assignment to make room for newly-acquired shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

Woodward, 33, was claimed off waivers from the Mariners last week. He played in five games for Boston and went 0-for-4 with a walk and two hit-by-pitches.

Throughout his 10-year career, Woodward has played for Toronto, New York (Mets), Atlanta, Seattle and Boston. He did not play in 2008 and has never played in more than 104 games in a season.
