Report: 890 ESPN to Go Off the Airwaves in Boston

by

The arrival of Boston-focused ESPNBoston.com could spell the departure of 890 ESPN radio in Boston, according to a report.

Boston Radio Watch, citing "reliable sources," claims that the all-sports format on the station will cease operation and go off the air "over the next couple days."

According to the report:

"Disney-owned sports behemoth is set to go live with the brand new hyperlocal ESPNBoston.com site come Monday (9/14) but there's been no word as to which local station is going to pick up ESPN Radio affiliation status."

There is belief that ESPN, with the launch of ESPNBoston.com, is looking to land on another spot on the AM dial in Boston. The signal strength, or lack thereof, has been 890's biggest weakness in the Boston market, along with an unreliable lineup of on-air hosts.
