Reports from the Globe and Mail are surfacing that former NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly was fired after getting caught reading a transcript from a confidential meeting between a 30-member player executive and the union's advisory board last June.
Kelly, who held the position for 22 months, was fired after a lengthy meeting that ended early Monday morning in Chicago. More details have been leaking since his dismissal including a report that Kelly had peeked through confidential transcripts at the NHLPA summer meetings this past June.
Kelly denied any wrongdoing.
"I cannot stand by and allow this false and misleading attack on my character and reputation," Kelly said in a statement released Thursday, according to ESPN.com. "I spent almost 10 years as a federal prosecutor, prosecuting numerous cases pertaining to fraud and dishonesty, including one involving a former NHLPA executive director. My personal ethics and reputation are beyond reproach."
