This isn't exactly how the Celtics wanted to begin a new season.

Forward Glen Davis could miss substantial time after suffering a thumb injury this weekend. How did he get hurt? A fight with a former teammate who was visiting from Louisiana, according to the Boston Herald. Sources say the altercation occurred on Sunday night and that Davis was reportedly defending himself when he was injured.

Davis underwent X-rays on the thumb on Monday and will have further tests this week. He may need surgery.

Head coach Doc Rivers told the Herald he was unaware of the circumstances surrounding the injury, but the newspaper reports that the Celtics are fully aware of the situation and are not happy.

Last season, the 23-year-old Louisiana State product played in 76 games for the Celtics, averaging 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game.
