It seems that Jed Hoyer's days in the Red Sox front office are numbered.

The assistant general manager, who briefly served as a co-GM with Ben Cherington when Theo Epstein briefly vacated the position in 2005, is close to being named GM of the San Diego Padres, according to ESPN's Buster Olney

The 35-year-old has worked with the Red Sox since 2002 and has previously interviewed for other GM positions, including the recent vacancy in Washington.

Hoyer would be replacing Kevin Towers, who served as San Diego's GM for 14 years. During the final weekend of the regular season, he was informed by Padres CEO Jeff Moorad that he would be relieved of his duties at season's end.

Although Hoyer appears to be the front-runner, the Padres have also interviewed Kim Ng, the assistant GM of the Dodgers, and others.
