Joba Chamberlain's Role Up in Air for 2010 and Beyond When did the "Joba Rules" become so complicated?

The Yankees are reportedly considering using Joba Chamberlain as a starter this season, but see him as the potential long-term replacement for Mariano Rivera as the team's closer.

Chamberlain would like to be a starter.

"I made 31 starts last year, and hopefully, I'll make the same and get about 200 innings," Chamberlain told the New York Post. "As a competitor, you want to be out there every fifth day [starting]. I want that opportunity. I have to go out and prove it, and I understand that. I like it that way."

The 23-year-old went 9-6 with the Yankees last season, posting a 4.75 ERA. In 2008, Chamberlain posted a 2.60 ERA in 42 total appearances, 30 of which he worked as a reliever.

Chamberlain has gone back and forth as a starting pitcher and a reliever in his major league career. He would like to settle into one role exclusively, but will do what is best for his team.

"Being down [in the bullpen] for two stints, you get to see how good [Rivera] is, and you know there is going to have to be somebody who comes behind him that replaces the legacy that is Mariano," Chamberlain told the Post. "If that opportunity comes, great. If we sit down and they say that, then we'll get after it."

Chamberlain is not the only player affected by the Yankees' decision. Phil Hughes also pitched as a starter and reliever last season. The team must consider Hughes' long-term role before making a decision.

The Yankees have a difficult decision to make, one that will impact the franchise this season and down the road.
