The New York Knicks are close to striking a deal with the Houston Rockets for Tracy McGrady, Yahoo Sports reports.

The Knicks would reportedly send Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hill and either Al Harrington or Larry Hughes to the Rockets in exchange for McGrady, Joey Dorsey and Brian Cook. The teams would also swap 2011 first-round picks and the Rockets would get the Knicks’ 2012 first-round pick, according to the Web site.

Knicks general manager Donnie Walsh has been interested in McGrady for months, and sources told Yahoo that talks between the two sides heated up over All-Star weekend.

In addition to giving the Knicks a chance to evaluate McGrady and see if they want to re-sign him after the season, the trade would also rid them of the $6.9 million they owe Jeffries for next season. That would further enable them to be a big spender in this summer’s free-agent market.

The Rockets, meanwhile, would get a promising young player in Hill (the eighth overall pick in the 2009 draft) and a future first-round pick for McGrady, who has been away from the team since December.

McGrady is excited about the chance to play for the Knicks, the article said.
