From the cauldron malfunction during the opening ceremonies to the men’s hockey team’s loss against the United States, Canada hasn’t exactly had a flawless Winter Games in Vancouver. And Stephen Colbert isn’t letting the host nation get off easily.

Colbert — known best for his Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report — spent the first few days of the Olympics in British Columbia, before returning to New York. Although he has claimed to be reporting live from Vancouver throughout the Games, Colbert has in fact filmed his reports from a studio in the Big Apple. After initially taking it easy on the Canadians, and even praising their efforts at times, Colbert finally decided to lash out — adding insult to injury for the disappointed hosts.

“You see, Canadians are really nice,” Colbert said on his show. “This is a country that went into the Olympics with the motto, ‘Own The Podium.’ But once the Games began, they graciously fell behind in the medal count. In fact, over the weekend, the CEO of Canada’s Olympic Committee said, ‘We’d be living in a fool’s paradise if we said we were going to catch the Americans and win.’ Well, I hate to break this to you, Canada, but Fool’s Paradise is also beating you in the medal count.”

In fact, the Canadians rank fourth in the medal count, having earned 17 spots on the podium during the Games. The host nation is tied for the lead with eight gold medals, and could still catch third-place Norway, which has 20 medals.

The only good news Colbert had for Canada was removing the Canucks — “Canadian Iceholes” — from his “On Notice” list.
