The Patriots have signed defensive end Derrick Burgess to a one-year contract, according to ESPN.com's Adam Schefter.
Burgess was acquired by the Patriots last summer in exchange for a pair of draft picks sent to Oakland. He improved his sack totals from his previous season, recording five with the Pats after making 3.5 in 2008. He was also in on 35 tackles for the Patriots.
Keeping Burgess at least provides the Patriots with a known commodity in the pass-rushing department, an area in which the team finished 23rd in the league with 31 sacks.
