The Red Sox traded right-handed reliever Ramon Ramirez to the San Francisco Giants just prior to the trade deadline Saturday, the team announced.
Ramirez, 28, was brought off the field earlier in the day after being hit by a ball above the right eye during batting practice. He appeared to be OK but was seen changing in the last few minutes that the clubhouse was open to the media.
Acquired prior to the 2009 season in the deal that sent Coco Crisp to the Kansas City Royals, Ramirez was 7-4 with a 2.84 ERA in his first season in Boston. However, his ERA increased each month of the season and he struggled out of the gate in 2010.
The Dominican Republic native had been a bit better of late — he had a 3.22 ERA in 22 games over the last two months.
In return, the Giants sent right-hander Daniel Turpen. The 23-year-old was 5-5 with a 3.09 ERA in 37 games out of the bullpen for San Francisco's Double-A affiliate in Richmond, VA.
The Sox recalled lefty Dustin Richardson to take Ramirez's spot on the roster.
