FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio was thankful he woke up Thursday morning and still had a job.

After nearly decapitating owner Robert Kraft during Wednesday afternoon's practice, Caserio had to loosen his own collar and hope he wouldn’t wind up on the chopping block.

"We'll try to make sure I stay away from throwing any footballs in Mr. Kraft's direction this morning, make sure nothing happens," Caserio said with a laugh.

On Wednesday, quarterbacks Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer were taking part in a drill in which they tried to throw a football 40 yards downfield into a barrel. After they concluded, Caserio — who once beat out Josh McDaniels for the starting quarterback spot at John Carroll University — tried to land one in the barrel, but his attempt sailed too far and nearly hit Kraft, who ducked to avoid the ball.

The two had a good laugh about it afterward, as did the Patriots fans in attendance.

"At least [Kraft] came over there and shook my hand, so we were able to have a good laugh over it," Caserio said. "I guess my arm is a little stronger than I thought it was."
