An anonymous “Bernie” came to the aid of Red Sox first base coach Ron Johnson‘s 11-year-old daughter Bridget in the wake of a horrific accident last Wednesday.

Bernie not only prevented Bridget from bleeding out after she and her horse were hit by a car on the side of a road, he also may have saved her leg entirely, says NewsChannel5 out of Nashville.

She is recovering at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, and doctors have been able to reattach her lower leg. A pulse has been detected  in the leg post-surgery, a very positive sign with regards to her chances of keeping the limb. She has been moved out of intensive care into a private room

The Johnson family moved to Warren County, Tenn. five years ago, and they have gained much appreciation for country living in their time there.

The Red Sox’ first base coach went on TV5 to express his infinite gratitude to the “total stranger” who saved his daughter.
