The Chase Rettig era will begin for Boston College this Saturday as the team takes the field to face Notre Dame.

Former minor league pitcher Dave Shinskie had been the starting quarterback, but he and Mike Marscovetra struggled this past Saturday against Virginia Tech, leading the Eagles to their first shutout loss since 1998.

After the defeat, head coach Frank Spaziani said that there would be a quarterback competition going forward, and Rettig, a highly touted true freshman from California, has apparently won the job, The Boston Globe reports.

"Chase is going to start and Mike and Dave will battle for No. 2," a team source said. "Chase took about 80 percent of the snaps in practice [Tuesday]."

Rettig turned down opportunities with powerhouses Tennessee and USC to go to Chestnut Hill.
