Will Delonte West's Return Help or Hurt Celtics? In an offseason littered with exciting contract extensions and acquisitions for the Boston Celtics, the re-signing of guard Delonte West definitely raised an eyebrow or two in the Hub.

West developed into a solid option in his first go-around with the Celtics, garnering quick fan appreciation for his agility and clutch shooting off the bench. He developed into a talented ball handler, who could be trusted leading the C’s down the court.

However, his stint in Boston came and went, as he was traded to Seattle for Ray Allen and Glen Davis — two key components in the Celtics recent success — at the end of the 2007 season.

Now that he’s back, so too are the skeptics. Since his departure from Boston, West has stirred the league with a collection of controversies, bookended by a recent weapons charge that forced him to sit out during the first two weeks of the 2010-11 season.

Partner his past issues with the even more recent locker room tussle with Celtics guard Von Wafer, and it makes us wonder … will his return help the Celtics, or will it harm the team’s iron-clad chemistry?

Aside from West’s off-court issues, what does his return mean for the Celtics bench? Already hosting a solid crop of guards, West’s presence on the bench could take time away from current backup Nate Robinson, who has always done what’s asked of him and stepped up in his supporting role for the C’s.

On the other hand, it seems that West is trying to turn over a new leaf in his return to Boston. He’s openly expressed his willingness to take on any role, and is taking in extra practice to boot. He spent the majority of his time on the court during his suspension, preparing for his revival in green and white.

If there’s one consistency that still stands in West’s career, it’s his court presence. No matter what has happened outside of the arena, he’s proven his worth on both ends of the court. His talents may help spread the Celtics threat at the guard position, rather than take away from them.

Head coach Doc Rivers has already announced that West will see playing time in Wednesday’s matchup, but it’s left to be seen how his presence will affect the C’s roster. What are you expecting from West?
