The Yankees may have offered Cliff Lee six years, $140 million, and while the Rangers probably won’t top that, they’ll be in the ballpark.

According to the New York Post, the Rangers are set to offer Lee a five-year deal.

“They want to know soon on Lee,” said a source of the Rangers — given their potential backup plan involving Zack Greinke.

Lee’s agent, Derek Braunecker, did not confirm or deny whether the Rangers made a bid on Tuesday or if one will come Wednesday.

“We are starting to move stuff along,” he said.

The Rangers are not expected to equal the Yankees monetarily, but the Rangers aren’t without advantages. Lee makes his home in Arkansas — much nearer Dallas than New York — and he has expressed how happy he has been to raise his family in Texas. The Lone Star State also has no state tax, meaning that a slightly lesser offer from Texas would be just as lucrative as one from New York.
