Surprises of NCAA Third Round Serve as Thrilling Preview of Upcoming Sweet 16 Action (Photos) Seeds can be meaningless, mind-blowing upsets can shake up a bracket and Cinderella teams can replace each other round to round.

The second-round Cinderella team, Morehead State, lost 65-48 to Richmond, but it didn't take long before a new Cinderella team emerged in the third round to replace the Eagles. Enter Virginia Commonwealth University. The No. 11 team steamrolled No. 3 Purdue 94-76 on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16.

There were plenty of other upsets in the third round as the luck of the Irish ran out when No. 10 Florida State trounced No. 2 Notre Dame 71-57, and No. 11 Marquette sent the No. 3 Syracuse Orangemen packing with a 66-62 victory.

While several double-digit seeds sent higher-seeded teams home early, there were also some exciting buzzer-beaters that didn't disappoint. Arizona just edged Texas with a 70-69 victory, Duke barely held on to give Mike Krzyzewski his 900th win, beating Michigan 73-71, UNC made it to the Sweet 16 with a three-point win over Washington and No. 8 Butler stunned No. 1 Pittsburgh with a 71-70 victory.
