The Red Sox continued their post-Babe Ruth struggles in 1921, again finishing more than 20 games out of first place.

Owner Harry Frazee continued to anger Boston fans by dealing many of the team's star players, including future Hall of Fame pitcher Waite Hoyt, to the Yankees and getting little in return. Boston sportswriter Nick Flatley went as far as to call for a fan boycott of the team in protest of Frazee, and the team finished last in the league in attendance.

Meanwhile, Ruth and the Yankees won their first-ever pennant, while the Sox finished a distant fifth.
