There is and will be no goaltending controversy for the Vancouver Canucks heading into Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Whether or not there should be one will be a whole different story.
In the moments following a Game 6 loss in Boston, Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said that Roberto Luongo will be his starting goalie in Game 7 on Wednesday, despite being pulled early in Game 6 after an embarrassing performance in which the veteran netminder allowed three goals in just 8:35.
"He knows he's going back in the net," Vigneault said after his team's 5-2 loss in Game 6. "He's going to be real good."
Luongo's poor start was the third in as many tries in Boston during the Cup Final. With his showing on Monday night, he's now given up 15 goals in three games at TD Garden.
Still, Vigneault thinks Luongo will be able to put that behind him as the series shifts back to Vancouver, where Luongo is 3-0 with a pair of shutouts in the Cup Final.
"I don't have to say anything to him," Vigneault said when asked if he'd offer Luongo any advice between Monday night and Game 7. "He's a professional. His preparation is beyond reproach, and he's going to be ready for Game 7."
