As a former NHL All-Star who scored 625 goals in his career, Joe Sakic is used to taking big shots. He took another on Sunday — on the golf course instead of the ice — and this time walked away with $1 million.

Sakic sank a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe. Tournament sponsor American Century annually offers a $1 million prize to anyone who can reach the pin in one shot on the par-3 hole.

"That's a shot you never imagine hitting," said Sakic, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Colorado Avalanche. "I've never even been close before."

Sakic spent 20 seasons in the NHL, all with the Avalanche (including six seasons in Quebec before the team moved to Colorado), before retiring in 2009. He said he plans to split the $1 million prize with Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation, which raises money for cancer research.
