Shortly after the Pittsburgh Penguins announced they were taking back a one-year deal offered to Jaromir Jagr, right winger Tyler Kennedy inked a two-year deal worth $4 million with the Pens, according to NHL.com.

Kennedy’s agent, Steve Bartlett, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Friday that a deal was close to being signed.

Kennedy, normally a third-line player, stepped up big for Pittsburgh in the absence of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin for a large chunk of the season. Malkin was sidelined on Feb. 4, 2011, leaving the Penguins without their two top scorers with 28 games remaining on the schedule.

In those 28 games, Kennedy recorded 12 goals and tallied nine assists. Had the winger not signed, he would have become an unrestricted free agent.
