Cyndi Lauper Messes Up National Anthem at U.S. Open, Blames Memories of 9/11 (Video)

The Star-Spangled Banner is a tough song to sing. It requires a rare vocal range and has a lot of lyrics. To be honest, if it wasn't for the roughly 17 bajillion sporting events I've attended, I might not know all the words, either, so it's difficult to be very judgmental when people screw up the national anthem, as Cyndi Lauper did at the U.S. Open.

Then again, I don't sing the anthem in front of thousands of people, so it's a little worse when Lauper messes up.

"O'er the rampants we watched," she sang, "but that flag was still streaming."

OK, even I know that's not the way it goes. Lauper tweeted that she choked up "in the middle remembering 9/11."
