This probably wouldn’t have happened in San Diego.

Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was named the cover athlete for MLB 12 The Show on Thursday, becoming the third Boston player to be featured on the game in the last seven years. David Ortiz (2006) and Dustin Pedroia (2009) were previously used on the cover of the game. Twins catcher Joe Mauer was on the cover for the past two seasons.

“I feel very humbled to be chosen for the cover of MLB 12 The Show,” Gonzalez said in a release. “I think most sports fans would agree it’s a dream come true to be immortalized as the cover athlete for a video game so I jumped at the chance to work with a leading franchise like The Show. It’s truly a great honor.”

Gonzalez batted .338 last season, his first with Boston. He was an All-Star and won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award, and he led the majors with 213 hits.

While all of that is nice, Red Sox fans are still upset with the way the season ended in September. They can find some hope in the fact that Ryan Howard graced the cover of the game in 2008, and the Phillies would go on to win the World Series.
