David Thompson, a junior at Shrewsbury High School, has been selected as the MIAA/NESN Student-Athlete of the Month Award recipient for November.
The award is given to an outstanding student-athlete for excelling in athletics, academics and community service.
Thompson has been a standout on the Shrewsbury varsity golf team and served as a captain this season. Thompson was the medalist in five of his 13 matches this season on his way to posting a 37.9 scoring average. He finished in fifth place at the MIAA Division I State Golf Championship after shooting a 73, and he placed third at the MIAA Division I West championship. Shrewsbury finished second at that event, and Thompson played a big part in helping the team win the league's sportsmanship award.
In the classroom, Thompson boasts a 4.55 GPA in a course schedule that includes four honors and one advanced placement courses.
Thompson also serves as a volunteer at his church helping with toy drives, and he also volunteered last spring as a mentor helping middle school students learning to play golf.
"David practices every day, even when the team does not have a match and continually drives all of his teammates to improve as well," Shrewsbury golf coach Leo Murray said. "It has been an honor to have David as a member of our team and we attribute much of our success to his efforts."
