Report: LeBron James’ People Rejected First Birthday Cake at New Year’s Party

What does a cake fit for a king look like? Not like the one Alethea Hickman made for LeBron James' birthday party on New Year's Eve, apparently.

King James' "people" rejected the $3,000 cake Hickman's Passion for Pastry shop made gratis for the Heat forward's bash, the Miami Herald reports. Hickman reportedly donated the cake for publicity, even hiring extra workers and diverting hours from other jobs during the holiday rush.

As expected, photos of the birthday cake from the party were posted around the Internet, but the cake in the photos was not Hickman's — it was an ivory-colored rum cake from Divine Delicacies, according to the report. James' "people" apparently saw Hickman's creation and did not approve, leading them to pull the old switcheroo with a new cake.

On whether Hickman should now be paid for her trouble since her cake was not used, Shelborne South Beach managing principal Jared Galbut sounded like a man who has no idea what he's talking about.

"That cake couldn't be worth more than $600," he was quoted as saying. "It's flour, eggs and water."

Spoken like someone who's never purchased a wedding cake, Galbut — or, even worse, like someone who didn't have to worry about checking the pricetag of his wedding cake when he got married. A simple, custom-made cake can cost almost $500, and Hickman's cake was far from simple; it included edible gold dust and an edible gold crown on top. Plus, it came from gaudy South Beach, where things aren't cheap.

Fancy cakes are expensive, bro.
