Report: Joseph Addai to Sign With Patriots, Join Group of Young Running BacksThe veteran running backs who showed up in New England for a tryout in late April didn't cause much of a stir then. But now that the draft is over and the Patriots have no additions to their young backfield group, speculation has increased.

Peyton Manning seemed to have it on good authority that Joseph Addai is the pick among the Patriots to come to New England, Indianapolis Star Colts beat writer Mike Chappell tweeted Saturday.

Chappell at first said Manning was sharing "breaking news." An hour or so later, he firmed up his information, saying, "Just to clarify PManning’s comment on Addai to Pats. He said 'sounds like Joe Addai might sign with New England. Is that breaking news?' "

ESPN later said it had confirmed the report.

Whether or not Addai, 29, is bound for New England, his joining the team wouldn't be a complete surprise. Addai, along with Ryan Grant and Tim Hightower, all worked out for the Patriots on April 20, according to reports from ESPN and the Boston Globe.

If the Patriots sign one of the veterans, he would supplement a group of running backs that includes Danny Woodhead, Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen, not to mention Kevin Faulk, whose status is still up in the air. BenJarvus Green-Ellis signed with the Bengals in the offseason.

Addai was cut from the Colts on March 9 as Indianapolis cleaned house, when Manning and many longtime coaches and staff were let go.
