Entering Saturday's game, the Red Sox were 5-11 in August.
With each loss, the team is quickly tumbling out of playoff contention and could miss the postseason for the third straight season. When the Red Sox hired Bobby Valentine as their manager last December, it was supposed to represent a culture shift after last fall's late-season breakdown.
But reports have swirled about the clubhouse's unhappiness with Valentine's managerial style. When asked to assess his performance this season, Valentine shouldered the blame.
"As far as my job’s concerned, whether I'm doing a good job, I'm not doing a good job," Valentine told reporters in New York. "I didn't get paid to do anything other than get to the playoffs, win a lot of games, be in the thick of things right to the end, even be in first place.
"The team I'm managing is not there. My job has not been a good job, if I had to assess. But that’s not what I do."
The Red Sox are currently 58-62.
