Serena Williams conquered tennis on British soil in dominant fashion on Saturday, but the American flag marking her feat was less resolute.

Williams won the gold medal in women's tennis at Wimbledon over Maria Sharapova, then took to the medal stand as the "Star-Spangled Banner" played and the flags of the countries of the top three victors were hoisted into the air.

As the familiar strains of the national anthem played through the venue that's akin to British tradition and reign, though, the American flag representing Williams' top finish failed to support the moment. It slipped from its holder, falling into a camera pit. Williams pointed to the wayward banner then resumed her pose for the rest of the anthem.

A coincidental mishap? Maybe. But who among you great elementary school history scholars out there remembers where the original "Star-Spangled Banner" came from? Some kind of gigantic battle that involved the early American flag and British gunships outside an East Coast port….

We'll let this one go, Great Britain.
