Dolphins Punter Brandon Fields Gets Drilled in Face With Football, Gaffe Rivals Mark Sanchez’s Buttfumble (GIFs)

Sometimes reality hits you like a slap in the face, or, in Brandon Fields‘ case, a football the face.

The Dolphins punter has been arguably Miami’s most valuable player this season, but on Sunday he might have been their most infamous as well.

Fields, who ranks second in the NFL in punting average (48.7 yards per punt), also serves as the team’s primary holder on field goals. He’s been solid in the role so far this season, but a little miscommunication led to a major gaffe against the Patriots on Sunday.

As Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis lined up for a short field goal during the second quarter on Sunday,  long snapper John Denney snapped the ball back to an unsuspecting Fields, leading to one of the funniest moments of the season. Fields was still waiting for Sturgis to get ready when the ball arrived, and, instead of landing softly in his hands, it hit him square in the facemask and bounced away for a fumble. The Patriots recovered and took the ensuing drive down the field for a touchdown.

The error wasn’t exactly Fields’ fault, as he was just the recipient of the poorly timed snap, but the hilarious turnover is at least on par with Mark Sanchez‘s memorable buttfumble from last Thanksgiving.
