MLB: Boston Red Sox at Houston AstrosThe Boston Red Sox aren’t ready to close the book on Brock Holt’s 2014 season.

Holt received some “encouraging news” after meeting with concussion specialist Micky Collins on Thursday, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. The utility man, who has been sidelined with a concussion since Sept. 5, could resume baseball activities Friday in the hopes of returning before the season is over.

“We’ll begin to incorporate baseball activities, likely when we get to Baltimore (on Friday),” Farrell said. “It’s still undetermined, but not out of the question that he would return before this season is out. But we still have to see how he responds to baseball activity that he takes in.”

While Thursday’s prognosis is reason for optimism, the Red Sox also understand time is running out. If Holt doesn’t return before the season ends Sept. 28, Boston is prepared to consider an alternative.

“I think we have to stay open-minded,” Farrell said. “We’ll still, we have to sit down with Brock and discuss this. Even if it weren’t prior to the end of our regular season, is there a possibility of getting him in some games in Instructional League just to answer the physical questions that we’re all trying to get answers to right now?”

The Fall Instructional League, which is geared toward low-minors players with upside, kicked off this week. Rafael Devers, Manuel Margot and Michael Chavis are among Boston’s participating prospects.
