Joe Girardi Loses It, Gets Ejected After Derek Jeter Hit With Pitch (Video)

It’s tough to be Joe Girardi these days, and frustrations boiled over for the New York Yankees manager on Tuesday.

The Yankees are all but out of playoff contention, with their elimination number down to seven after losing their third straight against the Tampa Bay Rays.

That looks like it’s taking its toll on the Yankees’ skipper, as he lost control on Tuesday night. Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch from Steve Geltz, and Girardi had seen enough.

The hit-by-pitch was the fifth time in the last four games the Rays have hit a Yankees player, and that combined with the losing baseball led Girardi to throw a tantrum.

“If you’re (going to) pitch inside, pitch the right way,” Girardi told reporters, according to NorthJersey.com. “And if you can’t pitch inside, don’t pitch inside. We’re not pin cushions. We’re human beings.”

Both benches were warned, but the Yankees obviously weren’t going to let the legendary Derek Jeter get hit with a pitch without any sort of retaliation. New York pitcher David Phelps started the inning by throwing inside on Kevin Kiermaier. Phelps was ejected and the benches cleared. No punches were thrown.

File this under “boys will be boys, especially when those boys are or are about to be eliminated from playoff contention.”
