Lions Release Kicker Alex Henery After Three Second-Half Misses Vs. Bills

Jason HansonThe Detroit Lions likely are appreciating retired kicker Jason Hanson a bit more these days.

The Lions released kicker Alex Henery a day after he missed three second-half field goals in Detroit’s 17-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the team announced Monday. Henery’s final miss came with a minute to go and the game tied 14-14.

Henery was the second kicker released by the Lions this season. Detroit continues to struggle with finding stability at the kicker position after Hanson, who spent 21 years with Detroit, retired two seasons ago.

The Lions tried to solve the problem during the 2014 NFL draft, but Nate Freese, their seventh-round draft pick out of Boston College, was cut after missing four field goals in the first three games of the season.

Last season, the Lions stuck with 39-year-old David Akers all season despite the fact he only made 78 percent of his kicks.

So what’s next for Detroit?

Matt Prater, Connor Barth and Jay Feely, who tweeted Sunday about waiting for a call about the Lions’ kicking job, all will try out to be the team’s next kicker this week, MLive.com reports.
