Joe Vellano, Ryan TannehillThe New England Patriots have released another former starter from their 53-man roster.

The Patriots waived defensive tackle Joe Vellano on Monday, the team announced. Vellano started eight games for the Patriots in 2013 after veterans Vince Wilfork (ruptured Achilles) and Tommy Kelly (torn ACL) were lost for the season because of injuries.

The Patriots also placed defensive end Michael Buchanan on season-ending injured reserve. The Patriots had to create two roster spots after activating wide receiver Brian Tyms and cornerback Brandon Browner from four-game suspensions.

Vellano has six tackles and one sack in five games this season, and he recorded 54 tackles and two sacks in 16 games last season. Vellano has practice-squad eligibility, so he could return to the Patriots if he clears waivers.

Buchanan has been slowed by an ankle injury this season, and had just two tackles in three games. The 2013 seventh-round draft pick had nine tackles and two sacks in 15 games last season.
