UMass-Lowell threw the kitchen sink at Rasmus Tirronen on Friday night but couldn’t come away with the win. On Saturday night, though, things went a bit better.
The No. 10 River Hawks (16-8-3) scored in all three periods and held tight on defense to bounce back for a 4-1 win over No. 19 Merrimack at the Tsongas Center.
After being stymied by Tirronen on Friday, UMass-Lowell needed just 23 seconds to score on the Warriors goaltender when defenseman Zack Kamrass blasted a slapshot from near the blue line.
Joe Gambardella would extend the River Hawks’ lead in the second period before Merrimack’s Ben Bahe got his team on the board at the 7:48 mark. Yet UMass-Lowell’s offense kept on soaring thanks to a short-handed goal from Adam Chapie later in the second and insurance goal from C.J. Smith late in the third period.
UMass-Lowell will face a tough task in No. 2 Boston University next Friday night, while Merrimack will battle No. 14 Boston College on the same day.
