Joe Paterno’s 111 Wins Restored By NCAA In Settlement With Penn State

History has been rewritten once again.

The NCAA announced a settlement with Penn State on Friday in which it agreed to restore 112 wins to the school’s football program — 111 of which came under former head coach Joe Paterno. Paterno’s additional wins once again make him the winningest coach in college football.

Those 112 wins were wiped from the school’s record in 2012 in the wake of Jerry Sandusky’s child molestation scandal and the school’s subsequent cover-up. A 2011 grand jury investigation revealed that Paterno knew of Sandusky’s actions as early as 2002 but kept quiet for nearly a decade. Paterno passed away in January 2012.

The settlement also decided that the school’s $60 million fine will be directed toward addressing child abuse in Pennsylvania. It’s a price that Penn State likely is happy to pay, as the vacated wins were the last tangible marks of the NCAA’s crippling sanctions. The Nittany Lions’ postseason eligibility was restored in September 2014.

Supporters of Penn State rejoiced upon hearing the news of Paterno’s restored wins, including, of course, the school itself. The Nittany Lions’ hockey team donned helmets with “409” stickers for their game Friday night, an homage to the number of wins Paterno earned at Penn State.
